Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24 1972 on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was encouraged by her aunt Denise as a little girl. Aunt Denise worked as an overnight nursing assistant in order to provide her with an opportunity to study literature or theater. DuVernay was first introduced to the film West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay was able to see through her mother's model of the power of art as an instrument for activism. DuVernay was raised by a mother who was socially conscious and showed her how to utilize art as a method to express herself. DuVernay was raised with her family in Compton was a summer resident in Lowndes County Alabama in the family home of her father. Her father was awed by the historic Civil Rights marches through the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in neighboring Selma Alabama. DuVernay toured Selma in the summer months and was in awe of the idea to film about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in the state of California in 1990. Following graduation, she attended her first year at the University of California Los Angeles where she earned qualifications in English and African American studies. DuVernay discovered a passion for journalistic broadcasting while in school. She was an intern with CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to examine the garbage in the house of one of jury. Her tasks to accomplish left her unsatisfied and so, after deciding to not pursue journalism, she shifted to the field of public relations. DuVernay was offered a job straight out college, as a new publicist at a studio. In this role, she launched her own company for public relations called The DuVernay Agency in 1999. The company launched a number of promotional and lifestyle networks that include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
